Now about that vinegar......If you saw my tabs at the top, there is one for $Saving Tips. I have some info on using vinegar to clean. Well, I thought I should test some of these if I was going to share them. So far, the ones I have tried work like a charm! The All Purpose Cleaner, Toilet Bowl Cleaner and the Fabric Softener. Also I tried straight vinegar on a stained t-shirt that Spray & Wash did nothing for. The stain is now gone! However, my towels do have a slight vinegary smell to them! lol I think I can deal with this, but I'm waiting to see if my husband notices ;) I didn't notice any other clothes smelling odd. I guess the fluffy towels just really soak it in. I think my next trial will be a vinegar & baking soda paste for carpet stains. You use an old toothbrush to work it into the carpet, let it dry & vacuum the stain away.....or so they say....I'll let you know.

ReplyDeleteIn a food processor, grate a bar of castile soap (not a soap designed to keep skin soft... you need a harsher soap for this application as it will clean better. I make my own castile soap, and can give you a recipe for it if you'd like). Set the grated soap aside and change out your grater disc to a processing blade. (No need to clean out the bowl!)
Combine in your food processor:
1 cup of the grated soap
1.5 cups of borax
1.5 cups of washing soda
1 cup oxygen cleaner
Process until you have a coarse textured powder. The smaller the soap pieces, the better they will dissolve in cold water.
Use 2 tablespoons of the laundry soap per load. You CAN use more, but there's no need. I have been using this for almost 3 years now in a front loading high-efficiency washer and it does a great job, even on my 9 year old's filthy play clothes. I still use a spray stain remover, just like when I used to use store-bought laundry detergent.
All of the ingredients can be found on the laundry aisle at the grocery store.
If you like, you can add a little vinegar to the rinse cycle, but I don't usually find it to be necessary.
For dishwasher soap, combine equal parts of borax and washing soda. Whisk thoroughly (or run it through your food processor) and use 1 tablespoon per load. You definitely need to add vinegar to the rinse cycle to avoid spots. You can put the vinegar into the cup designed to hold a rinse aid.
